Thomas the Apostle
Patron of our Holy catholic church of the East
Mar Toma,
called to be one of the twelve Apostles, and was called the twin.
St. Thomas
is best known for his role in verifying the Resurrection of his
Master. Thomas' unwillingness to believe that the other
Apostles
had seen their risen
Lord
on the first
Easter
Sunday
merited for him the title of "doubting Thomas." Eight days later, on
Christ's second apparition, Thomas was gently rebuked for his
scepticism
and furnished with the evidence he had demanded - seeing in Christ's
hands the point of the nails and putting his fingers in the place of
the nails and his hand into His side. Tradition says that at the
dispersal of the
Apostles
after
Pentecost
this saint was sent to evangelize Mesopotamia , and Persians; he
ultimately reached India, carrying the
Faith
to the
Malabar
coast, which still boasts a large native population calling
themselves "Christians of St. Thomas." He capped his left by
shedding his blood for his Master, speared to death at a place
called Calamine. His
feast day
is July 3rd and he is the patron of architects, builders, and
construction workers.
He is also
patron of our Holy Catholic Church of the East, and his succor is
His Beatitude Cardinal Mar Emmanuel III Delly, Chaldean
Patriarch of Babylon.
Happy 4th of July

y Gospel of Jesus Christ according
to St. Luck 13:1-9
There was a
person who had a fig tree planted in his orchard, and when he came
in search of fruit on it but found none, he said to the gardener,
‘For three years now I have come in search of fruit down. Why
should it exhaust the soil? He said to him in reply, ‘Sir, leave
it for this year also, and I shall cultivate the ground around it
and fertilize it; it may bear fruit in the future. If not you can
cut it down.”
The parable of the
fig tree illustrates God’s patience in waiting for all people to
repent. Since a fig tree reached maturity in three years, when no
fruit was found on it, the owner of the vineyard (God) has very
right to cut it down because is exhausts the soil and takes up
valuable space where something else could grow.
The gardener
(Jesus) asks for one more year. With some cultivation and
fertilizing the tree may bear fruit in the future. If not, then, it
can be cut down by the owner. St. Luke is saying that there is still
time for repentance, but this time is not unlimited.
The absence of judgment as tragedy at the present moment should
not lead people to conclude that they are righteous; the correct
conclusion is that God is merciful, and he is giving people a
little additional time to repent, one last chance. From God’s
point of view, there is always the possibility that people will
repent.
